Promoting Your Book – Tips for Doing Your Own PR

So you’ve written a book (good job!) and now you need to promote it. Do you hire someone or do you promote it yourself? There are a lot of benefits to having someone else promote your book but of course, that it isn’t always in the budget! Don’t worry though – there are ways that you can promote your new book yourself that are both affordable and efficient.

Book Reviews

One of the best ways to get the word out about your book is to get it reviewed. People love to read what other people think of things and they tend to put more weight in a review by someone who has read the book than other more obvious means of promotions. If you are selling an e-book, search out blogs and websites that are on the same topic as you book. Contact them and ask them if they’d be willing to read the book and share their opinion of it with their readers. Many webmasters love to get free things so you are likely to send out a lot of e-books! If you’ve written a paper book then contact magazines that do book reviews and send them a copy of your book. Having your book reviewed is a great means of PR.

A Website

You should absolutely have a website for the book. Create an eye-pleasing site and give people excerpts to read. People love free so a free chapter that is well-written and informative can stick in people’s minds. Tell them what else is in the book. Publish a page with the Table of Contents of your book. You can even give them teasers for each chapter. Make sure that if other websites review your book they link back to you.

Get testimonials or endorsements. This is similar to getting reviews except that testimonials are usually only a few sentences long. The testimonials will go on your web site. If you give people a free book they are usually more than happy to give you their opinion on the book.

There are many ways that you can do the PR for your book. Social media, article submissions for promotions and press releases can make a huge difference. Talk to those who have read it and really listen to what they have to say. Answer their questions. Get it out into the social media networks and get others talking about it. If you think creatively you can get a lot of attention for your book!
